Transforming Mornings with Miracle Habits

Hey Fit Fam!

Have you heard that quote about how you become like the five people you spend the most time with? (If you’re a parent, I’m positive you’ve said this to your teenager!) Todays post is about the guy who studied that. Hal Elrod, in his best-selling book Miracle Morning states that “research has shown that we become like the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Who you spend your time with may be the single most determining factor in the person you become and in your quality of life.” He goes on to say that “If you are surrounded with lazy, weak-minded, excuse-making people, you’ll inevitably become like them. Spend time with positive, successful achievers and inevitably their attitudes and successful habits will reflect on you. You’ll become more and more like them.”

His life-changing strategies focus on the early hours of the morning – how you start your day. Miracle Morning is a book that’s all about creating a morning routine that sets you up for success. By adopting a few simple habits each morning, you can transform your entire day and, ultimately, your life.

Why Mornings Matter

Hal Elrod makes a powerful point: “How you wake up each day and your morning routine (or lack thereof) dramatically affects your levels of success in every single area of your life.” Starting your day with intention and positive habits can lead to better health, increased productivity, and more happiness.

The Miracle Morning Routine

Elrod introduces the concept of “SAVERS,” an acronym for six practices that can transform your mornings. Here’s how you can incorporate these into your routine:

  1. Silence
    • Action Step: Begin your day with a moment of silence. This could be meditation, deep breathing, prayer, or simply sitting in stillness. Spend just a few minutes focusing on your breath to calm your mind and set a positive tone for the day.
  2. Affirmations
    • Action Step: Write down a few positive affirmations that resonate with you. For example, “I am healthy, I am strong, I am capable of achieving my goals.” Read these affirmations aloud each morning to boost your confidence and motivation.
  3. Visualization
    • Action Step: Spend a few minutes visualizing your goals and dreams. Imagine yourself living a healthier, happier life. Picture the steps you’ll take to achieve these goals and how great you’ll feel once you do.
    • I have to interject my own experience with this. Years and years ago, I attended an amazing workshop in Chicago called “Making Things Happen”, put on by author and accomplished entrepreneur Lara Casey. Picture a small group of women, from all walks of life, laying on the floor of a small, darkened conference room, while the host walked us through the coolest visualization exercise. She told us to visualize what ‘success’ meant to us. In my head, I saw my family joyfully eating dinner together in a spacious kitchen. She had me SMELL the room, she had me DESCRIBE the lighting, the SOUNDS, the EMOTION. It was completely visceral and almost 20 years later, I still haven’t forgotten my vision. I’ll tell you what, if you can’t visual your own success, your efforts are like dust in the wind. Try visualization – it WORKS!
  4. Exercise
    • Action Step: Incorporate some form of exercise into your morning routine. It doesn’t have to be long—just 10-15 minutes of stretching, yoga, or a quick 30 minute workout at Fit Body can energize you and kickstart your metabolism for the day.
  5. Reading
    • Action Step: Dedicate time to read something inspiring, spiritual, or educational. Even just 10 minutes of reading can provide new insights and keep you motivated. Choose books, articles, or blogs that encourage healthy living and personal growth.
  6. Scribing (Writing)
    • Action Step: Take a few minutes to journal. Write about your goals, gratitude, or reflections. Journaling can help clear your mind, track your progress, and set intentions for the day.

My 3 favorite quotes from the book:

  • “You can’t change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” This emphasizes the power of consistency and small daily actions.
  • “Your level of success will rarely exceed your level of personal development, because success is something you attract by the person you become.” Focusing on personal growth each morning sets the stage for achieving your goals.
  • “Remember, the moment you accept total responsibility for everything in your life is the moment you claim the power to change anything in your life.”

Create New Habits

Here are some habits to help you incorporate the Miracle Morning into your life:

  • Set Your Alarm Earlier: Give yourself an extra 30 minutes in the morning to practice these habits. Gradually adjust your wake-up time if needed.
  • Prepare the Night Before: Lay out your workout clothes, set up your journal, and have your reading material ready to go. This makes it easier to jump into your routine without hesitation.
  • Consistency is Key: Stick to your routine every day. Even on weekends, maintain some form of your morning habits to keep the momentum going.
