Let’s talk about limiting beliefs

Have you ever caught yourself thinking “There’s no way I could do that” or “I’m to old to lift weights”?  As a fitness professional, I’ve heard countless women say these types of things, and there’s a name for them: limiting beliefs.
I wanted to share some thoughts with you about this. Most of you might know that I’m also a professional photographer – in fact, I’ve been doing photography as a full-time career long before I became a gym owner. I remember, years ago, sitting across from my most cherished photography mentor, clutching my water bottle nervously. The conversation had suddenly gotten vulnerable. She looked at me – really looked at me – and said something that would change everything:

“Your only limits are the ones you choose to believe in.”

Let that sink in for a moment. Has anyone ever told you that? Up until this moment in my life, nobody ever breathed those words into me.

Here I was, thinking we were going to talk about lighting diagrams and pricing guides, but instead, she dropped this truth bomb that would ripple through every aspect of my life.

Let me back up… long before Neil and I opened our fitness studio, long before we watched hundreds of members transform their lives in the studio, I had already been waging war against two tiny but mighty words:

“I can’t.”

These words were literally banned in our household when our daughters were growing up. Not because I was a strict mom (okay, maybe a little), but because I understood, deep in my bones, how these words could shape a life, build walls, and close doors before they were even approached.

But here’s the thing about limiting beliefs – they’re sneaky little devils.

They don’t always show up as an obvious “I can’t.” Sometimes they dress up as:
– “I’m not ready yet”
– “Someone else would be better at this”
– “My body isn’t built for [insert activity]”
– “I’ll never be [fill in the blank]”
– “Maybe next year when…”
– “I’m not good at…[fill in the blank]”

Sound familiar?

Every day at the studio, we watch these beliefs try to sneak their way into our sacred space. They whisper to us all, trying to get in our heads and defeat us.
Here’s what I’ve learned: limiting beliefs aren’t just about whether you can or can’t do a pull-up (though let’s be real, those can feel impossible!). They’re about LIFE. They show up when you’re:
– Starting over in a new career
– Moving to a new city
– Going through a break-up
– Feeling overwhelmed with money issues
– Carrying on after losing someone you love
– Fighting through an illness
– Having your first (or fifth!) child
– Heck, even making sourdough

(Side note: whoever said sourdough was easy clearly never met my first three attempts. But that’s a story for another day… )

So how do we flip the script? How do we turn down the volume on these limiting beliefs that are playing like a broken record in our minds?

Here’s what works for me (and the incredible humans in our Coastal Fitness family):

1. Curate Your Tribe
The people around you are either lifting you up or pulling you down. There’s no in-between. Choose wisely. Turn down the volume of the nay-sayers. You know who they are.

2. Catch Yourself
When you hear that limiting belief creep in, pause. Take a breath. Ask yourself: “Who told me this was true? And what if they were wrong?

3. Create New Evidence
Every time you do something you thought you couldn’t – whether it’s holding a plank for 30 seconds longer or moving across the country – write it down. Build your own proof that your limiting beliefs are just stories you can rewrite.

The magic happens when you start treating these beliefs like unwanted guests at your party – acknowledge them, then show them the door.

Here’s what I know for sure: You are stronger than you think. You are braver than you believe. And you are absolutely capable of things that feel impossible right now.

So the next time you hear yourself say “I can’t” (or something similar) remember this love letter from my heart to your heart. Remember this girl here who banned those words from my household. Remember the hundreds of men and women at Coastal Fitness who prove these limiting beliefs wrong every.single.day.

And then? Do it anyway.

All it takes is one “I can” to change everything.
